Fish in a Tree reflection
Ally Nickerson is a girl who is in sixth grade and she doesn’t know how to read. She has a problem called dyslexia which makes it hard for her to read. She gets into trouble a lot in school and goes to the principal’s office a lot so she can avoid school work. Even though Ally’s sometimes a troublemaker, she is also very creative and loves to draw. She has “The Sketchbook of Impossible Things.” She draws a lot of crazy stuff in there and it’s all very creative. Like how she drew the ” Car Train” and the ” Dinosaur Picture.” She is also very smart. In chapter 14: Boxed in and Boxed out, Ally was smart enough to figure out what was inside the box. Nobody has ever figured that out and she was the first one to figure it out. I think that Ally is very creative and smart, even if she can’t read.
Her classmates all have different personalities and some of them are very mean to Ally and some of them are good friends with Ally. Shay is a bully to Ally and Shay is very mean to Keisha and Albert. Like how Shay made fun of Albert for wearing shoes that was so small, he had to cut it. Jessica copies whatever Shay does. Like how she wanted vanilla ice cream, but Shay got chocolate ice cream, so she changed her mind and she got chocolate ice cream. Albert and Keisha are both Ally’s friends. Albert is very smart. I know that Albert is very smart because when Shay was talking about her new purple sweater, Albert told her that in the ancient times, people used snail slime to make cloth or fabric or any other kind of material, purple. Keisha is very brave and stands up for Ally. Suki is quiet and plays with wooden blocks when she is nervous. She isn’t mentioned a lot throughout the book and she doesn’t play a huge role in the book. Oliver craves attention. I find Keisha likable because she is best friends with Ally and she stood up for her in the beginning of the book.
Mr. Daniels is a nice teacher. He sees the creativity in Ally and he knows that she’s smart. Unlike Mrs. Hall, Mr. Daniels takes his time to understand Ally and he tries to help her. He doesn’t take her to the principal’s office like what Mrs. Hall did. That’s what I liked about him. He takes his time to understand Ally and tries to help her.
I found this story realistic. It feels as if this happened in real life, but with different people. This story sounds like it would happen in the real world. I know this because some people, like Ally, could have dyslexia and can’t read. Plus, many people go to sixth grade like Ally and her classmates. Sadly, they are bullies in the real world like Shay. It sounds authentic because there could be friends like Keisha who are really brave and stands up for their friends and there could be friends like Albert who is really smart.
